This is a guide to free and low cost computer classes in the Berkeley area.

Adult School classes

Courses, schedules, and costs vary. Printed schedules may be available at BPL Central Reference desk. Education budget cuts have eliminated many Adult School classes. Check schedules carefully.

  • Berkeley Adult School
    Located at 1701 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley and accessible by North Berkeley BART or San Pablo bus lines. See Career Technical section for Computer and Business/job classes, and Lifelong Learning 50+ for classes at Senior Centers.
  • Oakland Adult School
    No computer classes offered currently. Check again in future semesters.
  • Piedmont Adult School
    Offers Excel, Powerpoint, QuickBooks, and Word classes.
  • West Contra Costa Adult Education
    Offers a variety of beginning and intermediate classes in English and Spanish, as well as a Computer Users Group for Seniors.
 

Community college classes

The schools below offer an assortment of classes. Typical class names include Computer Literacy, Keyboarding, and Word Processing.

  • Berkeley City College
    Offers many classes, beginning to advanced, short and long term.
    Located at 2050 Center Street, Berkeley (near Downtown Berkeley BART).
  • College of Alameda
    CIS 205 Computer Literacy is a basic class. Located at 555 Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway, Alameda.
  • Contra Costa College
    CIS 110 and CIS 135 are basic classes. Located at 2600 Mission Bell Dr., San Pablo.
  • Laney College
    BUS 219 is a basic class. Located at 900 Fallon St., Oakland (near Lake Merritt BART).
  • Merritt College
    CIS 205, 209, 233 are introductory classes. Located at 12500 Campus Dr., Oakland.
 

Public Library classes

In Berkeley: Drop-in beginner classes at Central: Mondays 6pm, Thursdays 10am; call 510-981-6148 for information.

  • Albany Public Library
    Weekly tutoring; appointment mandatory. Located at 1247 Marin Ave., Albany. 510-526-3720 ext. 5
  • El Cerrito Public Library
    Weekly tutoring; appointment mandatory. Located at 6510 Stockton Ave., El Cerrito. 510-526-7512
  • Oakland Public Library
    Computor tutoring in English and Spanish offered at Elmhurst and Chavez branches; call for details.
 

Senior Center classes

  • South Berkeley Senior Center
    Computer Lab open for drop-in practice as well as for scheduled class. Call to verify times. Class is through Berkeley Adult School: http://bas.berkeley.net. Located at 2939 Ellis St., Berkeley. 510-981-5170
  • North Berkeley Senior Center
    No instruction or classes, but a small computer lab is available. Located at 1901 Hearst Ave., Berkeley. 510-981-5190
  • El Cerrito Open House Senior Center

Community Centers

  • Center for Accessible Technology
    Offers a series of one-hour classes for adults, and keyboarding for children. The Center specializes in disability access. Located at 3075 Adeline St., Berkeley. 510-841-3224
